Somewhere back in 2011 Shimebango from The World Famous Fat Killahz invited me to a studio session with the group. Shimebango, Marvwon, Fatt Father and King Gordy were all set to be present. I didn’t know exactly what I was getting into, but I was about to get a rare look inside the studio with all 4 Fat Killahz working collectively. Their personalities are larger than life, jokes, stories, the songs and how they interacted- all go X10 when they are together. And now a glimpse into that world is caught on tape, chopped into 3 short segments for your viewing pleasure.
It was like witnessing rap Nirvana in the flesh. Hearing a great song on an album is one thing, but witnessing a classic being created is an entirely different experience. King Gordy didn’t’ stop lighting blunts from Mendocino County (emerald triangle, he didn’t hesitate to educate me on the origin of the trees) and sung some (I don’t even know the words to describe- unbelievable?-type) chorus and verses. Fat Father was telling me stories from the past that eventually inspired the Fat Killahz cartoon, in between drags from a cig or a blunt- noting, he doesn’t really smoke (only on special occasions). Bango narrated some of the session. He actually went as far as telling me a potential name for the new Fat Killahz record, “Fat Tueszday”. Who knows what it might be called now.
Watching them create together was a historical event. They wrote a couple songs on the spot that day after choosing a beat from a batch that was sent to the groups email. There were some unmentionables out of the mouth of Gordy. Fatt Father gave us a lesson on Fatherhood at the end of the third clip. These guys are infinitely talented and their personalities together were unlike anyone I’ve ever interacted with. It was something unreal to witness, and we still don’t know if we’ll ever get a new Fat Killahz record to this day. But for now, here is a rare look into something we may never hear on record.
It wasn’t until recently that I realized I had this footage on the shelf, so I decided to finally share. With recent solo releases from all 4 members of the group individually, all we can do is hope they have something as a group coming our way soon!!!
